These photographs are the first of a series, showcasing the B&D display gardens over a period of time. These first images of the garden were uploaded for the benefit of a garden editor of a major magazine, but we hope that you will find them interesting, especially for our customers outside of the Pacific Northwest region. In a normal summer, the peak bloom for these Trumpet, Oriental and Oriental-Trumpet (OT) varieties would be the middle of July to the first week of August; in 2005, because of our wetter and colder-than-normal spring, we are seeing delayed bloom.
There is a fasciated stem on the right side, when it opens, there will be four times the normal number of buds, tightly packed together. Theory is that our cool, wet weather this spring has caused this somewhat rare occurance, but no one knows for certain. At any rate, the stems will most likely be normal again next season. These stems were over 6 feet tall (in full sun) last summer. This variety is used as a greenhouse forcing lily and makes an excellent cut flower, but is rather imposing for smaller areas.
